Why do Dr. Jiamachello and Dr. Lopez recommend flossing?

At Laurel Park Dentistry our dentists and hygienists recommend flossing because your toothbrush can’t clean everything in your mouth — especially the tight spaces between teeth and under the gumline.

Here’s why flossing matters:

1. Removes Plaque Between Teeth

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth. Brushing cleans the front, back, and chewing surfaces — but floss reaches the areas in between where cavities often start and cannot be seen easily.

2. Prevents Gum Disease

When plaque sits between teeth, it irritates the gums causing inflammation and bleeding. If left untreated this can lead to calculus build up which further irritates the gums and can cause periodontal disease.

Regular flossing is an easy at home way to help prevent gingivitis and periodontal disease.

3. Reduces Cavities

A large percentage of cavities form between teeth. Floss removes food particles and bacteria that brushing misses that can cause cavities in these in between areas.

4. Helps With Bad Breath

Food stuck between teeth feeds bacteria — and that can cause odor. Flossing removes those trapped particles.

Quick Reality Check

If your gums bleed when you floss, that usually means they’re inflamed — not that you should stop. Bleeding often improves within a week or two of consistent flossing. If you do not note improvement with daily regular flossing then it is best to visit us at Laurel Park Dentist so we can evaluate your gums and provide treatment as needed.
